This drop spindle has a Canarywood whorl, a very dense wood. This is a favorite whorl wood for True Creations because of its density and ability to take fine details in the turning. This rim weighted whorl is finely turned with great details. The drop spindle is perfect for spinning and plying all types of fibers.
Canarywood is an exotic wood from South America. Its heartwood color can vary a fair amount, from a pale yellow-orange to a darker reddish brown, usually with darker streaks throughout. Pale yellow sapwood is sharply demarcated from heartwood. Color tends to darken and homogenize with age. Because of its beauty and density, it is perfect for drop spindle whorls. It is one of my favorite whorl woods as it takes turning details, such as beads and coves beautifully.
Canarywood trees grow from 60′ to 100′ tall, with trunk diameters of 2’ to 3’.
